Bled Island is located in the Julian Alps in the northwest of Slovenia, surrounded by the Lake Bled. Situated just 55 km from the capital city, Ljubljana and mere 35 km from the Ljubljana International Airport, it is one of the favored tourist sites in Slovenia.

The lake is a mix of glacial and tectonic origins, with the length of 2 120m (6,960 ft), width of 1, 380 m (4,530 ft) and the maximum depth of 29.5 m (97 ft).

Lake Bled owns its’ exceptional beauty to the scenic surrounding of mountains and forests which, depending on the season, add a different touch of allure.


This small island is the only Island in Slovenia, with only several buildings, the most prominent one being the church to the Assumption of Mary.

Built in the late 17th century and decorated with Gothic frescoes, this church has a 52 m high tower. In order to get to the church, you must climb a Baroque stairway built in 1655, consisting of 98 stone steps leading up to it.


There are wedding ceremonies held at this church quite frequently. According to tradition, and for good luck, the groom should carry his bride up these steps on the day of the wedding, prior to ringing the bell and making a wish in the church.

If you are into rowing, you should also know that Lake Bled has very good conditions for this sport and, in fact, it hosted the World Rowing Championships in 1966, 1979, 1989 and 2011.
